Caring for Collections – Chapter 1

Just like every collector is different, every collection is different. While collections of historical artefacts can be worlds apart in terms of content, collectors do have a common goal – the preservation of their collection for future generations.

Ensuring a collection remains in the best possible condition can sometimes be a daunting prospect for new or less experienced collectors. Our challenge was to take the State Library of Queensland’s wealth of knowledge on collecting and preserving and deliver it in a way that put this knowledge out in the community for all to share in a package that was both engaging and provided practical skills and knowledge.

To answer this challenge we created a series of short videos, each focusing on a commonly-asked question that collectors bring to the table.

Concentrating on specific practical areas allowed us to provide the most useful and relatable information to our audience rather than potentially inundating them with information on the complexities of broader techniques, concepts or practices.

The result is a suit of content that extends the conversation beyond the library and collections out into the community, delivering practical advice whilst illustrating the importance of documenting culture and heritage, to ensure our valuable history lives on.
